I saw, and thoroughly enjoyed, Sex & The City today. Stacey, Nancy, Janet and I had an honest-to-goodness girls' day out. First, we had a tasty lunch at CUP Diner in Astoria (and I ate healthy, too - and didn't reward myself with junk food afterwards!), and then headed in to enjoy the movie. I have to say, if you're a fan of the show, you'll enjoy the movie. So take that as you will.
Nancy and I went back to her place, where Mike and Keith were waiting with the kids; I got to play with Baby Boyd for a little while until my boys got antsy, and then we were back off to Casa Kiladitis. All in all, a very nice way to spend a Sunday, normally the day I loathe the most.
It was an honest-to-goodness girls' weekend, having been out to Sag Harbor for Lauren's baby shower the day before. I can finally reveal the super secret projects, having completed one of them (the baby blanket) in the car on the way to the shower! I'll have pics up soon, but there is a baby blanket, a hat, and the Baby Chuck Taylors, which went over as well as I prayed they would. I have some washcloths that I'm working on, but it's not super-secret anymore since I pulled one out at the actual shower to work on.
Lauren is a glowing mommy-to-be, and she was surrounded by some gorgeous baby gifts and lots of love. I even got to see the baby belly move!! I swear, I never got tired of watching my own belly jump around when Will, and then Alex, would let me and everyone near me know they were awake, so I love watching my friends get to experience the same things.
Sigh... back to the real world manana.

So we didn't get to Raiders after all, but Alex decided he wanted to watch Monster Squad. I was only too happy to oblige, and that actually sat still for most of the movie. There was some drifting into another room during the middle, but for the big showdown at the end, all rear ends were seated. Monster Squad rocks.

Mike just got me the 20th anniversary DVD, which is chock-full of extras goodness (that I will report on when I can lock myself in my room for an hour or two). Chris - you need to review this on Guiltless Pleasures. Just sayin'.

So now, I have a buddy for my quotefest. Will turned to me last night, as the movie ended, and said, "Mom. Wolfman has nards." It took me so off guard that I giggled like a fool. And Alex mourned Frankenstein's leaving, because "he's a nice monster." Please, God, let my boys continue to love sci-fi...

Nostalgia

I've been enjoying the Sci-Fi and Fantasy podcast for a few months now. Listening to Anthony and Scott/Bill talk about various movies have really reminded me of some great movies that I haven't seen in ages. I just listened to an episode where they talked about The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, for instance, which really got my brain working; especially thinking about the great Ray Harryhausen movies I used to watch with my dad on Channel 9 when I was little. Jason and the Argonauts was standard Sunday afternoon viewing fare whenever it was on. I remember going to see Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger at the old Colony movie theatre in Jackson Heights. Annie, Sandy and I played Clash of the Titans when we took a break from playing Star Wars.
The guys on the podcast have talked about other movies I loved, like Something Wicked This Way Comes - I mean, holy cow! Is that on DVD? I need to get that! (PS - yes, it is; I just checked Amazon.) There's an episode on Tron, they've discussed the Planet of the Apes movies - classics as well as Tim Burton's revisit with Mark Wahlberg, they've covered Twilight Zone: The Movie (Do you want to see something really scary?), and even March of the Wooden Soldiers.
Great movies, intertwined with so many great memories. I think it's time to sit Will and Alex down and turn on the DVD player. I hope they grow to love these movies like I have, and I hope I can give them the good memories like my mom and dad gave me. We have started working our way through Raiders of the Lost Ark, so we'll see... I just wish watching movies at home didn't become ADD-theatre these days.
